Mixed grip nuances

I started deadlifting with DOH grip and was quite solid until the 300s and so I recently switched to mixed grip, where I would DOH every set until the heavy sets which I would use mixed grip. Now I am trying to use mixed grip on all warms up leading up to make sure I get enough practice. Some things I am wondering after my most recent session:

  1. What’s your preferred balance of Straps vs. Grip? My initial thought is to warm up normally, perform the heavy single and first back off set with mixed grip, and then straps for all other sets.
  2. Any difference on how to approach 2ct pause or 2" deficit deadlifts? Does it make sense to only use straps on those or do something similar to what I described above?
  3. Do you modify your grip position (vs. straps/DOH) based on the slight change in arm positioning on the supinated hand? For example, I grab a Texas Power Bar with my pointer on the nurlings for DOH grip, but when I do the same for mixed grip (pinky on the nurling), the supinated arm feels a bit farther away from the legs. Does it make sense to move the grip over an inch on the supinated arm (e.g., pinky on the smooth part)?
  4. I have no pain or discomfort on the mixed grip during lifts, but I do notice the following day my supinated arm seems sore if I were to perform a curl or other bicep flexion exercise. I feel I am not “curling” my deadlifts and keeping straight arms throughout, but just wanted to make sure this wasn’t abnormal or something that goes away after training with mixed grip for awhile. Thanks!

MPG,

Check this article out, as I think it’s relevant: The Grip Problem

To your questions:

  1. That’s fine for someone with adequately developed grip strength, sure.
  2. It depends on the individual. For folks who have problems keeping the bar on their legs or breaking the bar off the floor when using a mixed grip, I’ll often eschew straps in these supplemental lifts. If this isn’t an issue, I’ll often recommend using straps.
  3. No, as the supinated hand’s arm position does not change under traction.
  4. I think that’s pretty normal overall.

Thank you kindly for the advice and article!

Thanks for the article. That’s absolutely wild, I had no idea numbers varied so insanely between grip strategies. I assume the top numbers for double overhand are with straps? Did you achieve those numbers around the same time as the mixed grip numbers? I’m curious to know how much of it is absolute ability with a given strategy vs changing strategies at higher weights.
