Motor Neuron Disease

Hello Doctors,

First off, thank you for all you do. I’ve been following your content and using your templates for many years, and you’ve been a huge influence on how I think about training, health and much more.

A friend of a friend has recently been diagnosed with ALS.

In their own words:

“I have been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (ALS). I am therefore looking to preserve movement as best I can. I have quite serious weakness now in the left arm and hand, and developing weakness in the right arm.

Medications are Riluzole currently, and Edaravone starting tomorrow. Starting stem cell treatment together with a peptide (type unknown at this point) as from 24 January”

Based on the above, do you think it would be reasonable to start this person on a 2x/week program (horizontal leg press, machine chest press, machine pull down, recumbent stationary bike), keeping volume and intensity low at first, then gradually building up over time as tolerance to training improves?

Many thanks,

Tim

Hi,

Sorry to hear about this. Unfortunately this is a really tough, progressive condition. If he is interested in physical activity/training in order to maintain/improve function as much as possible, it’s reasonable thing to do.

Thank you, Dr Baraki
