Hi doctors, I hope you’re keeping well!
I was wondering if you’re familiar with Multifocal Motor Neuropathy? Just over ten years ago my father was diagnosed with this in his left shoulder. At the time, he was told that there were few treatment options and that those that existed had quite severe side-effects, so the decision was made not to treat the condition. Over the years his deltoid muscles, biceps and triceps have wasted away. His left hand still functions, but he can’t use his arm, it just hangs.
He is now 80 and, worryingly, is starting to have the same symptoms in his right arm. I am trying to do a little research into the condition and see what treatment options there are now. I saw this paper and, as I understand it, the best option seems to be immunoglobulin injections, either IV or subcutaneously. This can slow deterioration.
I just wanted to ask if you’re familiar with MMN (I think it’s pretty rare)? Have you treated many people with it and did they see much success?
I’m trying to encourage my father to keep exercising his good arm, on the assumption that that might slow down any muscle wasting. He is your stereotypical “stubborn old man”, so it’s tricky, but he and the rest of the family are concerned about him losing function in both arms.
He’s going to see his doctor about it soon. I’d be interested to know what your thoughts are about the condition and the available treatment options (are immunoglobulin injections considered a safe treatment for someone of his age, for example?)
Many thanks for your help.
