My wife has just started NLP four months after pregnancy and is doing very well on the lifts and her diet is in check however the weight she is wanting to lose (about 40lbs) is going nowhere. Based on her caloric intake and activity she has to be in a deficit. She tracks and stays around 1500. I’ve told her she needs to go to the Dr. and have things checked out. Has anyone run into not being able to drop weight after childbirth? I think some hormone or thyroid is out of balance. Thanks!
If her weight is not moving, she is by definition not in a calorie deficit.
Thyroid labs are a standard part of the pre-natal evaluation, and she could certainly have it re-checked although it’s relatively unlikely to explain what’s going on.
Is she breastfeeding?
She recently stopped breastfeeding after going back to work. There was no mention of any irregularities in the pre natal evaluation. Could her body be preserving what it can since she just stopped feeding? I don’t want her to go much if any below 1500 calories. I would think that would be in a deficit unless her metabolism is complete trash.
Thanks!
Depending on how far postpartum she is, if she can continuing pumping that would likely be beneficial.
I don’t really know what else to tell you regarding the deficit, man. If she was in a deficit, she’d be losing weight - no other way around this.
It is possible there is some measurement error in the calorie tracking and she’s actually consuming more than 1500 (this is extremely common), or she may actually need to go lower, and there’s nothing inherently “bad” or “dangerous” about it. If it would make you feel better about the situation, you could see whether her doctor is willing to check the pertinent basic labs here.
