I previously posted on here but I thought I’d post again with more information regarding my back issue
Around mid 2017 I started feeling slight pain in my lower back - si joint area. Which usually went as I warmed up. As I kept pushing through the pain onset got worse and worse. Doing a set of bent over rows I felt my back give and I dropped the barbell and rested. As I was warm I felt little to no pain until I cooled down. I kept trying to be active but the activities I could do decreased such as running, rowing, boxing and playing soccer as the pain would come on during and after. Around August 2018 my back went whilst picking up.a dumbell… This was the worst episode as I couldn’t move and had to get help standing up. Was pretty much bed ridden for 2 weeks
In this time I read a lot of mcgill work and found a mcgill practitioner in the UK which I saw. He basically told me I had a typical weight lifter injury and confirmed the injury on my mri. Which said I had an open fissure at l5 s1. I also sometimes had nerve pain in my hip crease but no disk issues at the level that would cause it. Also get symptom in my right glute and leg.
Anyway he prescribed a walking routine and mcgill 3 only. I did see some improvement but iv stagnated for the past few months with progress.
I feel as my pain is pretty low and sometimes I have no pain but soon as I go for a short walk or even try to do low level core exercises I can feel my back tighten up and the pain start to come on.
I was under the assumption that I shouldn’t exercise into pain but I have read that I can along as its tolerable which I guess is relative to the person. My toleration to the pain has decreased alot as I am getting tired of training knowing the pain will come on
What I have noticed is that being lazy and Laying for too long sets off my back pain. And a warm shower gives me some pain free time.
I plan to return to the gym and get back into work and activity but I guess I am fearing the thought of being in pain after
@Anjb sorry to hear about the low back pain. Your feelings of fear the pain will return or intensify is understandable. We can’t speak to your specific case without a consult. I do recommend checking out this podcast on pain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXZC2lfg7VA
However, what are your current goals and what do you view as the greatest barrier(s) to accomplishing these goals?
@Michael_Ray thanks for the reply. The current goals are to be able to train and go about usual daily life pain free. Be able to do movements and exercises I couldn’t do due to the pain. The main goal before was being in aesthetic shape and I was willing to go through the pain after. However I wasn’t doing much exercises that aggravate it.
Atm I’m just fearing activity and movement because of the pain and I think that has got me more sensitive to the pain and physically de conditioned
Just to show how de conditioned I am and sensitive. I have been doing no weight rdl as previously I had pain/pinch in my back when doing them. I put 5kg a side on a bar and did a set of 5. My back tightened up instantly. Finding it hard to get back under a barbell when things like this instantly cause pain and or tightness
“Tightening up” is not a problem in and of itself. The far bigger issue here is your response to this perception, which is likely characterized by a dramatic fear-avoidance response.
It sounds like you would benefit from a consult and professional guidance from our rehab guys.
