My sister had shoulder surgery recently (lysis of adhesion) and is starting PT. Her surgeon recommended taking Oxy before the PT to make it easier to tolerate. I remember Austin in a podcast saying this was a bad idea, but don’t remember the reasons or context. Assuming I’m remembering correctly, please tell me the reasons for his recommendation or point to the podcast.
At least the surgeon is recommending starting aggressive PT soon after surgery. It seems so many are very conservative.
If a patient is unable to participate in PT due to pain issues, some form of analgesia may be helpful to facilitate rehab.
I’m just generally not a fan of “standard” / “routine” post-operative opioid prescriptions, broadly speaking, although this should be a case-by-case decision. There is nothing specific about oxycodone as it relates to physical therapy.
Our podcast on pain medicines (I believe episode 99) may be helpful.
