Pneumonia Part II

44 year old male, 200 lbs, was on weeks 5 of Jordan’s original GPP template. A little over 3 weeks ago I was diagnosed with pneumonia. No training since then until this past Thursday (Thanksgiving). I was originally prescribed a Floroquinolone antibiotic which I took for 3 days before developing an allergic reaction (swollen lips, hands and face, never got to point of swollen throat). I immediately stopped the antibiotic, saw my GP, and he prescribed 2 differ antibiotics (Z pack and the second one escapes me). Austin had told me to be mindful when returning to training, as the Floroquinolone antibiotics can cause tendon issues in certain individuals. I was noticeably and understandably sore after my first testing session (will just run a quick LP for a few weeks) but also noticed extreme tenderness in my right Achilles area (above ankle). My question, even though I did not finish the treatment with the Floroquinolone antibiotic, could this tender Achilles be related to the tendon issues some people get? Or more likely just soreness/ overuse from the lack of training? I’ve never gotten any soreness or pain there before. Pain did not occur acutely, but was noticed 24 hours later with the expected DOMS. As I type this it seems the logical explanation is the lack of training, but just thought I’d ask. Thanks for reading.

I can’t say for sure.

If I recall correctly, the risk of tendinopathy is dose-independent, so it’s possible. It’s also possible that you’re just experiencing the routine aches and soreness of going back to training after a layoff. How has it felt since you initially made this post?

Pain in Achilles has dissipated. New pain creeping up leg behind knee and lingering a little longer. Have been training through it, continuing mini LP. Also wanted to note out loud, I am surprised at how much my work capacity has taken a hit from being sick and a three week layoff from training. My heavy set of 5 on the DL now is in low to mid 300’s and leaves me winded. Pneumonia sucks.

Glad to hear the Achilles is feeling back to normal, that’s good news!

And yep, 3 weeks off is a long time!

Hi Austin (and apologies to OP if i’m hijacking your thread  )

not sure if this an answerable question, but i also had an enforced 3-week gap (moving house, got sick … seriously, don’t ask … ) and Day 1 of my 2nd run through The Bridge was most painful (my bar-weights were down between 5 and 15% from where i’d left off)

Is this something that you’d expect to resolve quite quickly once regular training is re-established, or is it more like a “square one” kinda thing?

Thanks You, Sir!

You’ll be back to normal fairly quickly.

Cool!

Thanks Austin, most reassuring
