Pneumonia

Sorry, I may have accidentally posted this in nutrition forum yesterday. 44 year old male, 205 lbs, approximately 25% BF. Re running Jordans originally GPP template he put out last year and on week 5. Last WO was 11/3 and started feeling achy later that evening. No training since, but took 800 mg of Advil a couple of times a day to get through work. Finally went to dr and X-ray confirmed pneumonia. Started 500 mg of Levifloxacin on 11/7. Dr wants me home for one week but I started a new job this week and don’t want to miss this much work. How does a (what I think) healthy person develop pneumonia and how detrimental would it be if I went to work. It’s a semi physical job. Also, could my previous training experience help me to recover from this, or at least not regress if I pushed things a little? Thanks for your time.

Mike

Healthy people can get pneumonia just like healthy people can get strep throat, the flu, or just about anything else. If it’s a simple uncomplicated pneumonia that can be treated as an outpatient with oral antibiotics (as appears to be the case with you), your ability to return to work depends entirely on how you feel. Going back to work isn’t going to somehow make your pneumonia progress or get worse, assuming you’re on appropriate treatment.

Your previous training experience should help you recover quicker, yes. However, I’d be cautious with your return to training since you’re on a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that can affect the tendons in a small portion of individuals.

Thanks Austin and i read about the tendon side effects of the antibiotic this morning. I usually ease back into training whenever I miss more than a week (illness or vacation) so I’ll probably be a little extra conservative in this case. Thanks again!!

Austin, I took the Fluoroquinolone antibiotic for 3 days and began to notice an allergic reaction (swollen lips at first, then swollen face and hands). I immediately stopped the antibiotic, saw the doctor who put me on two new antibiotics (Z pack and forgot the other one at this time). Had my first training session in 3 weeks this past Thursday (Thanksgiving). I figured three weeks away from training a quick LP would probably be in order. Was definitely sore which was expected, but also noticed extreme tenderness in my right Achilles? (just above the ankle in the back of lower leg). So my question is regarding the tendon issues while on the Floroquinolone antibiotic. In your experience, even though I didn’t finish the treatment, could this sore Achilles be related to it? Pain feeling was not acute. It was noticed approximately 24 hrs after the training session, much like the rest of the DOMS. As I type the question out, it seems logical that it’s more related to 3 weeks without training, but just thought I’d ask, since I’ve never experienced soreness in this area before. Thank you again for your time.
