Preventing kidney stones

Hello Doctors,

I recently posted on the FB group about getting a kidney stone which I seem to have passed after 5-6 days.

I’ve been trying to get some information on how to best prevent them but there seem to be different opinions on the topic.

I understand that there are genetic factors in play, and I can confirm that my mother and uncle have had a kidney stone once in their life.

I’ve read that sufficient hydration (not sure how much water one should be drinking tbh), reducing sodium intake, reducing animal protein intake (seriously!?) and more are important things to consider.

I’ve also read that there are different types of stones and that maybe analyzing the stones could give more insight, but I am unsure about this.

Granted that this seems like a somewhat uncertain topic, do you have any specific recommendations for preventing kidney stones?

Would you recommend I see a urologist in the coming weeks?

As always, thank you Doctors for your help!
Matteo

There may be some genetic factors at play.

There is not a ton of evidence on the hydration question, but “expert opinion” is to aim for 2.5-3 liters of fluid intake per day (or whatever intake generates ~ 2 liters of urine output per day).

Lowering sodium intake may have some theoretical effects here, but I’m not aware of direct evidence on reducing the risk of stone recurrence.

Increasing fruit and vegetable intake (particularly of citrus fruits) is worthwhile.

If you are taking a vitamin D/calcium supplement, I would discuss with your physician and consider stopping that.

You are correct that there are different types of stones, and that the specific type you tend to form may impact recommendations. However, unless you managed to strain your urine and capture the stone that you just experienced, there’s no way to determine this until/unless you experience a recurrence. There are certain medications (such as thiazide diuretics) or supplements (such as potassium citrate) that can be helpful, depending on the stone type.

Thank you for the detailed answer Dr. Baraki, much appreciated.

I tried to capture the stone but never found it so that’s that.
