Hi everyone,
Is the process of protein muscle synthesis still triggered if a large enough quantity of protein is ingested right before going to sleep or is it necessary to eat with a few hours?
Thanks and sorry if this was asked before,
Alex

Alex,
Thanks for the post and I hope you’re doing well.
Muscle protein synthesis can be triggered from a pre-bedtime meal, yes. It is not necessary to wake up overnight and have a snack to do this, nor is it necessary to use a slow-digesting protein like casein. The most important thing is to get the correct total number of calories and protein in per day. Meal timing is a far-distant second.
Thanks so much for the answer and the work you are doing for us, doctor. Really appreciate it!
Hi Jordan,
If I want to have a protein drink before going to bed to top up my protein intake per day, is whey as good as casein? Is there any reason to spend more to get casein?
I think whey is superior to casein in every way (whey?). I don’t recommend casein.
