Quantifying Volume: Primary/Secondary vs. Tertiary Movements

What’s up Docs,

Just curious as to how you guys track volume in general, and also how much weight you give Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary movements when quantifying volume.

I’ve starting tracking my volume based on number of “hard sets” vs. sets x reps, as it just seems to make more sense to me and is easier. Just curious if you take a similar approach, or if it’s more nuanced

Additionally, when quantifying volume, how much weight do you give Tertiary movements, relative to Primary and Secondary movements? I suppose this depends on the Tertiary movement in question, but just curious on your general take.

Sorry for not really having a specific question, so if you’d like me to be more specific, I can adhere.

Thanks!

Garrett,

Thanks for this. I just track my sets @ RPE 7 or higher for total volume. In general, I try to quantify volume for deadlifting, squatting, and pressing exercises separately. Hopefully that helps.

Thanks for your time, Jordan!

One quick clarification. When you say you quantify volume separately for the main four lifts, does that mean separate from the volume of your Tertiary movements?

I guess my specific question would be, do you you even track volume from Tertiary movements, and if so, to what extent to they add to your weekly volume? I realize this is probably Majoring in the Minors here, but I live for that shit.

Thanks again!

To be clear, I don’t calculate volume separately for four lifts, but only three ( I rarely press). I combine the volume of all movements that have similar movement patterns, which typically includes the 3* movements too.

Yup, that makes sense.

Thanks again, Jordan!
