Question: risk of training-induced retinal detachment?

Hi,

My girlfriend is interested in weight training and would like to see an SS coach to learn the lifts. However, she is concerned about whether or not repetitive and/or sustained valsalva maneuver during training presents any increased risk for retinal detachment for individuals (such as herself) who are already at high risk due to severe myopia (-10.00 in both eyes). I assume the answer is likely “no,” but would appreciate any input from the doctors that could potentially put her mind at ease (if that is the case).

Thanks!

It appears I need to go do an ophthalmology residency.

We’ve had a number of questions about eye-related issues on this forum, and since no one outside of the field really knows much about ophthalmology (except perhaps Emergency Physicians handling eye emergencies), we’re not particularly helpful here.

Sorry!

Thanks, Austin. I asked Jordan this same question on a live Q+A once and he just said “no” so I was hoping for more info if that was the case. Cursory googling indicates it’s at least a possibility unfortunately.
