Recomp or Bulk/cut in weight class sports

Hey Jordan,

I’m a weightlifter who competes at 89kg. I have a healthy body composition but wouldn’t mind seeing it get leaner/more muscular over time while preserving my current weight for competition purposes. Do you generally recommend people stay around their weight class and maintain weight or do you think there is value in going through bulks and cuts. Would you expect a significant difference in muscularity/leanness over time from either approach?

I should add that I’ve been lifting and eating well for close to a decade so I don’t anticipate any sort of “newbie” changes to the extent that may be applicable.

I think it mostly depends how an individual responds. I’m not sure that more muscle while maintaining a close enough weight to make the -89 weight class is likely to improve performance, but if it’s a personal aim, I think you could try the maintenance mode first and then if that’s not providing suitable results…try the other.

I would go outside of 4-5kg above your weight class though.
