RPE Question

Sometimes I put too much weight on the bar, but I’m getting better at hitting the programmed RPE. I’m still wondering what to do if I mess up. For example, if the set is supposed to be 4 reps @ 9, and after the 3rd rep, I know I’ve only got one more in the tank, should I do the fourth rep, making it 4 @10, or stop at 3 @9? In this situation, I’ve been performing the rep because I don’t really want to start negotiating with myself when I’m under the bar. It seems to really effect any remaining sets though.

Thanks (and sorry if you’ve covered this somewhere else before).

I would generally advocate to do the rep and calibrate a little better next time.

Mike T.'s stand is

  1. Don’t think about it during the set. Just execute the set. Focus on your technique or whatever you need to think about.
  2. As soon as you can after you rack the barbell, go through the flow chart to rate your set to the best of your ability.http://articles.reactivetrainingsystems.com/2017/12/05/how-to-use-rpe-in-your-training-correctly/#more-1229
