Safety of long-term Xyrem usage for sleep

Hello,

Please see this thread for my medical background regarding my sleeping issues. https://forum.barbellmedicine.com/forums/medical-q-a-with-dr-jordan-feigenbaum-and-dr-austin-baraki/16369-sleep-quality-medications

My doctor has agreed to let me try Xyrem (GHB) for the purposes of sleep quality and induction, he said 3-4.5g twice a night (every 4-5 hours). Do any of you have any knowledge or experience with the long-term safety of using Xyrem? From what I’ve read, it causes dependency and withdrawal symptoms. Also raises prolactin, growth hormone and causes some cognitive issues. I’m willing to give this a shot though for the name of sleep.

Thanks!

I have never prescribed this medication myself, and don’t consider it a particularly safe medication (which is why it’s a controlled substance) – though as with anything, it’s use comes down to a balance of the benefits versus the risks. If if dramatically improves your sleep quality and daytime functioning, it may make the potential risks more “tolerable”, depending on your values and preferences.

What else do you consider worthwhile, any of the GABA drugs like pregablin, baclofen, gabapentin? I’m tired of being tired. I don’t know what the underlying issue is until my in-lab sleep study but even then what are they going to do besides rx’ing one of those four drugs?

The sleep study is by far the most important thing. But if it were me, I’d be far more comfortable using a medication like modafinil over a hypnotic agent.

I can’t sleep at all on Modafinil though, keeps me up 18-20 hours with 100mg. I just called the sleep center and they said they fast forwarded me in an appointment with a sleep physician in 6 weeks
