Sciatica-Hip related symptoms

Hi to every one,

first of all, I would like to thank you all for the helpful content you have been providing. It has really allowed me to find better ways to improve.

To the topic, I will firstly explain my history;
have been lifting since Jun 2016 after an injury to the left leg while playing basketball with a bodyweight of 149kg. Had my left knee slip to left after a jump. On the way to the hospital, it slipped back into its place. Nothing was found to be problematic and nothing invasive was suggested as a therapy, only simple exercises to get my muscles stronger. I think that meanwhile, I have developed a fear of movement in a certain way resulting from the knee injury, which might have caused crepitus in my left ankle. My lifting journey started after then, have lost till I was 85kg, after yoyoing a year or two I was at a stabilized weight around 90-100kg. In that time period, I have done 5x5 almost a year, although I had plateaued multiple times, which is dumb. After that, I’ve gone on with “The Bridge”, did that twice. Still had not really learned the concept of RPE in a true way, like paying attention to the technique, and not allowing it to break down. My first and last reps would substantially differ in terms of how they looked. I have done Powerbuilding 1/2 and recently I have been doing Hypertrophy 2. Through all these periods, I think I had some injuries that were simply ignored by me. I am not sure whether they were not really red flag signs, that are too significant to cause that big of discomfort that would allow me to realize, or it might only be me ignoring them. Recently I have been having sciatica-like symptoms(tingling, electric-shock-like sensations) in the left leg. Also, I realized that I have some pain in the left hip, and left groin area when trying to externally rotate my left leg(as in a sumo-deadlift position). After some research, I tried to observe whether I have some weakness in my left leg, I was not able to differentiate enough, since it is too subjective to me, but when I do squats I can feel like I am able to trust my right leg more, it feels more stable and my left leg feels like it tends to go forward. I am not sure whether these problems are related to something that has to do with the knee injury, which was not seen at the time and has developed over time, or it is something about my spine, or something else. I tried to do the so-called piriformis-stretch out of despair and realized that as I try to pull my affected leg at the knee towards my should on the other side of my body, I have pain in the groin area.

Although I am acquainted with the content of yours on pain science, I think I still get sucked into the mindset of an information-paralyzed person more and more, the more I try to search on the topic. So I thought I would try to get some information through forums. I really like the sport and would like to still get better at it, but this stuff makes me nervous and creates thoughts of not being able to do the sport to my full capacity. So what would you suggest I do in this situation?

In case needed:
Age:23
Height:190cm
BW:96kg

Thanks in advance.

Hey man! There’s a lot to unpack here…I really don’t think we could to most of this justice in a forum response. I think you would benefit from a remote consultation with our pain and rehab team in order to talk more in depth about some of your experiences, thoughts, and beliefs on these topics. I am confident that we will be able to provide some clarity and find a way to move forward positively in your training.

Couple of small things:

  1. Crepitus isn’t something to be concerned about. Check out this article here.

  2. It’s normal to plateau in training when you training stimulus is staying exactly the same.

  3. Static stretching does not have evidence to improve performance and change tissue structure, so I wouldn’t waste your time doing it, specifically if it is causing you additional discomfort.

Good luck! Hope some of this helps.

Hannah
