Squat ROM After Partial Meniscectomy

Hey, BBM! After six years of dealing with an old meniscus tear and exacerbating it three weeks ago, I had a partial meniscectomy yesterday. Post-op is going well so far! I’m already walking well and have fantastic knee flexion according to my PT (around 125 degrees).

However, a specific constraint that my PT stated today has me concerned for my future as a recreational lifter. Though my orthopedic surgeon has not spoken of any such restriction despite knowing that I recreationally lift, my PT has instructed me to never perform weighted squats past 90 degrees of knee flexion in the future…like, for the rest of my life. Unweighted is apparently completely fine, but weighted is out. :frowning:

That being said, I haven’t found any literature specifically supporting this constraint in the setting of partial meniscectomy (or arthroscopic surgery, period). I certainly intend to ask my surgeon about this at my follow-up next week, as he is a lifter himself and had a partial meniscectomy as a teenager. What’s y’all’s take on this constraint? I have a feeling that it’s good faith generic advice given to anyone post-knee surgery and may not be universally applicable.

Hey there,

We generally don’t agree with permanent restrictions like this in such a scenario. Probably worth reviewing these resources to start, and may be worth a one-off consultation with one of our rehab clinicians for more detailed/individualized guidance. I would be working towards a return to normal activity.
