Starting a Journal Club

Jordan asked me to post this on the forums to spark some discussion.

I’m a DPT student and I am trying to start a journal club here at my school. I want to have the first meeting be more of a primer about how to read research, asking the right questions, good vs bad research, etc. To do this, I was wondering if anyone has any good resources/papers to this effect that I can distribute to those interested for our first meeting. Also, as this is my first time with a journal club in any capacity, if anyone has any tips or suggestions as far as what it should look like (the flow, format, selecting papers, etc) that would be awesome. I’ve also gotten some verbal commitment from faculty members that are willing to help out.

Anything else I should be thinking about?

Don’t forget to bring food to the meeting, students will go to meetings with food

good luck

Hello! I myself am a DPT student (second year). One of my first summer semester courses involved several case management scenarios in which we were instructed to seek out articles and literature pertinent to the case. The instructors introduced us to a system known as P.I.C.O. When searching for journal articles, the most important considerations are: PATIENT population (P) INTERVENTIONS (I) COMPARISON (C) and OUTCOMES (O). Another important consideration would be where exactly the literature falls within the hierarchy of evidence. Is it a simple case study? Cohort study? Quasi experimental design? Randomized double-blind placebo controlled clinical trial (RCT)? or was it the “gold standard” systematic literature review and meta-analysis? I do hope this was helpful. Very glad to find another fellow student on this forum!

So some resources i would suggest reading for the first couple of meetings.
