Tobacco Cessation

Dear doctors,

Long time listener and program user just now stumbling across the forum. A couple podcasts past, you all discussed what might be the leading causes of mortality as anti-obesity medications change the health landscape. I was wondering fi you see the rise of vaporizers (especially among the youth) as likely to increase tobacco-related mortality in the future.

More importantly, I am wondering what the medical literature says about tobacco cessation. I am a long time cigarette smoker but an otherwise healthy lifter in my late-20s. As I age (and consume more barbell medicine media), I try to leave the habit behind but find it very difficult. Similar to the obesity problem, I find willpower-fueled impulse-control nearly impossible long-term, and my environment (academia) is completely saturated with fellow cig-smokers. This is something I work on with my psychiatrist (whom I see for a separate problem, OCD), which helps understand the nature of the addiction, but tobacco ultimately proves really resistant to their toolkit of interventions.

Thanks in advance from a fellow doctor (PhD in Chinese Literature)

Hi, welcome to the forum.

I am wondering what the medical literature says about tobacco cessation.

As you might imagine, this is an extremely broad question, and not one that is easily amenable to answering via this forum.

I’m not sure whether you’re asking more specifically about pharmacotherapy to aid in smoking cessation, but if so, there are several options that markedly improve success rates with quitting, including Bupropion or Varenicline. You can find more information at https://smokefree.gov
