Training Recommendations

Hello Doctors,

I discovered your content from Alan Thrall’s Youtube channel about a year ago. Since then I’ve been following your content religiously and it has made a very positive impact on my lifting. Thank you for all that you do.

I’ll try to summarize my training history as concisely as possible:

  1. I’m 27, 5’ 8"“, 185lbs with a 34” waist, a year ago I was about 165lbs with ~ 32" waist

  2. I’ve completed The Bridge, Powerbuilding I and Strength I and I’m now on my second round of Powerbuilding I. During these programs I’ve experienced on and off hip pain that has limited my squat progression.

  3. Prior to Barbell Medicine templates I’ve only briefly trained for strength using various LP style programs that I did not respond well to.

  • I’m interested in increasing my strength in the squat, bench press, deadlift and press and would one day like to compete in a powerlifting meet.
What would be your recommendation on the training I should do next?

I’m thinking of repeating Strength I since I feel like i could get more out of it, but I’m wondering if Strength II would be more appropriate at this point? I rougly have 2 years of barbell training experience. I repeated Powerbuilding I for a second round as I believe that will give me a chance to rehab my hip so that it will be 100% for my next strength focused block.

Looking forward to your input and thank you for taking the time to read this.

Anthony,

I think if you’re getting good results from Strength I then I’d repeat it. If your results are starting to taper off or you’re plateauing, I’d go with strength II provided you could train an additional day.

Both are great for competing in a PL meet.
