Two times of horrendous nerve / muscle spasms after training?

The first time I had this was while deadlifting somewhat light weights. My right glute/hamstring/calf muscles started feeling very tight after that. Because I felt so uncomfortable, I stupidly decided to do some stretching throughout the night which made the pain worse. The pain was definitely 10/10 where you can’t sleep at any position at all.

I only somehow managed to resolve the issue after 2-3 weeks with a combination of prednisone and muscle relaxants.

The second episode happened yesterday while I was squatting 150kg. Its technically not heavy, I did 140kgx6 @ 8 last week. The only cause I can think of is that I did my workout only 1.5 hours after waking up. It felt like I tweaked my glute muscles/SI joint. I felt fine for the first 1-2 hours but the pain gradually worsened throughout the day.

Are these normal symptoms for a back injury or is this more of a muscle thing? Some advice would be great. I’ve had quite a bit of back tweaks in the past but I never experienced such a debilitating thing until recently.

Howdy! Welcome back to the forum

The symptoms you describe can be normal, though use of medications in this way is not my preferred approach for most types of back pain. I don’t think I am able to give you a full accounting on what happened and what to do going forward. This would be better handled by a consultation with our pain and rehab team, which I think you would benefit greatly from.

Thanks Jordan for the reply. I have been holding back on that but I guess I’ll have to pull the trigger on consultation as this can’t continue much longer.

Just a little more context, the frequency of back tweaks have been increasing since Oct 23. It has been usually quite minor but it seems like its getting worse. There seems to be no correlation with the weight I am lifting as I have been getting tweaks even when warming up. I would say form is fine and I am wearing a belt every set.
