I am 39F. I love lifting and cardio, especially running. I was recently diagnosed with an upper extremity DVT. It is in right subclavian vein and right axillary vein. My right arm is also almost 2 in bigger than my left. There is slight pain and tingling. I have started AC. I know that I will not be do much in regards to working out especially arms and running for the next few weeks. My question is when can I start working out my arms and what particular movements should I start with and which ones should I avoid for the time being?
Hi there –
If your symptoms are under control and you are already taking therapeutic anticoagulation, we wouldn’t have a strong reason (or evidence) to recommend significant activity restrictions moving forward relating to your DVT. I would use your arm based on tolerance, and gradually progress back to normal activity.
My bigger question is, whether there was a clear provoking factor for this clot, and whether that factor is reversible or not. Or if there was no clear provoking factor, in which case a spontaneous upper extremity DVT at the age of 39 is very unusual and would merit further investigation.
