Another knee pain question

Hi Docs,

I have been having some unusual knee pain and I am hoping that I could get some advice on what might be causing the pain and / or what to do.

Some details:

  • The pain started a bit over a month ago in my right knee.
  • The pain is a sharp pain on the back of the knee.
  • The pain only occurs just at powerlifting depth on the squat, any higher than the ‘point of pain’ and there is no pain at all regardless of load, however even at bodyweight, to go to this point, it is quite painful, it seems to be an all or nothing type deal in one spot.
  • The pain is significantly more painful on the eccentric portion of a movement.

Some possibly relevant info:

  • Been training for just over two years with powerlifting goals, so squatting to depth is very desirable.
  • Currently on the PB III, previously having completed the BB template, PB II, Strength II, Hypertrophy II in order of most recent to least.
  • I also have been doing two days / week of martial arts training for around 6 months, this does not noticably increase pain during or after sessions.
  • I have read the pain in training article, which is quite helpful, I have been doing relatively light leg press instead of squats without pain as a replacement, but no improvement over around a month so far :(. Things like deadlifts dont cause any pain and have been training as normal with good progress.

Thanks for any advice.
