Baby colic, possible diet changes and/or other treatments.

Not sure if this should be in medical or nutrition,

My cousins 1-2 month old is ‘constantly in pain with his stomach’, was taken to a GP, who said it’s colic, and there isn’t much you can do about it. It’s common for babies. My cousin read that ‘some people have had success cutting dairy out of their diet though (for breastfeeding mothers anyway)’, so i had a look at the wiki article and there were a few linked studies with some mild evidence(??) to support some dietary changes for the mother.

Apparently ‘He looks like he’s in pain. Scrunching his legs and tending stomach. Will stop crying once he farts’. My cousin also says ‘Doc was saying that it happens because their digestive tract isn’t formed yet, so babies eventually grow out of it. But sucks seeing them in pain in the meantime. And NO ONE gets any sleep!’

Sorry for all the annoying quotes but i don’t want to chinese whisper anything.
Are you guys able to help whatsoever? Either way thanks so much in advance

Unfortunately infants are outside my area of expertise; we’ll see if anyone else around here can chime in.

With that said, the comment that their “digestive tract isn’t formed yet” is bullshit.

Thanks anyway Austin, i am thinking maybe because breast milk only diet is going to have negligible fibre component and this is probably a large factor for baby colic in general?

From what i’m reading, babies ‘usually grow out of it’ around the same time that American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that babies start eating partial solid diets.

There is actually no generally established definition for colic, nor is there a clear evidence base supporting a specific cause. You are correct, however, that it is generally a benign, self-limited (i.e., resolves on its own) condition.
