I will be beginning Hypertrophy I next week. I am 5’8", 175lb bw, have a 41" waist, and am about 5 months inactive since finishing Starting Strength. I am interested in Hypertrophy I because it says it’s designed for losing fat while training for hypertrophy. My question is what kind of diet/meal plan do I need to be eating: bulk, maintenance, or cut? If bulk or cut, how many calories into the surplus/deficit should I be eating? Thank you.
With that waist circumference, you should aim to lose weight via a modest energy deficit. I don’t have enough information to tell you how many Calories you should be eating, but I’m guessing it’d be around 2300-2400 to lose weight.

Thank you! I will be sure to run a modest deficit then. Should I expect to lose weight as my waist goes down, or will the process of hypertrophy cancel out lbs in fat lost with lbs in muscle gained, and either expect to stay relatively the same bodyweight or even gain some?
Your weight and waist will trend to tack together. Abdominal muscle hypertrophy does not contribute much to waist circumference changes. It’s mostly a function of body fat. I would expect and advise you to lose weight.
