BMI and health ?

Dear docs,

I was listening to I believe the latest podcast you released, and I was intrigued when Jordan mentioned that one of the parameters he would look at was the BMI to assess health, more specifically he mentioned that if BMI is 30 or greater, he would recommend to reduce that, for health reasons.

Now, my current BMI is about 30, and I was naturally wondering, in your opinion, should I be worried about my health (especially since I train regularly) ? Some info that might be relevant:

  • Age 38
  • Resting heart rate 55 bpm
  • Blood pressure (measured at home in the morning) 125/60
  • Weight 213 lbs
  • Height 5’11
  • Waist size 35 inches
  • Squat 375 lbs Bench 275 lbs Deadlift 485 lbs (tested 1RMs)
  • Usually walk between 10000 and 15000 steps a day

As an aside, I’ve been greatly enjoying the recent podcasts, thanks a lot for sharing so much free, high quality content.

Thanks for your time and all the best.

FT,

At a BMI of 29.7 with a waist of 35 (if measured correctly), I don’t feel strongly about weight loss. If your waist were closer to 37 and/or your BMI was > 30, I’d likely recommend weight loss if you were up for it.

Thanks for the kind words. Trying to keep putting out a steady stream of stuff!

-Jordan

Thanks for the quick response !

I obtained the measurement by following the guidelines in

I measured it first thing in the morning. Is this what you had in mind ?

Yes, exactly!
