Box step up and lunges

For bodybuilding routines with goal hypertrophy
For box step ups and lunges do you recommend barbell or dumbbell?

For the ab work in GPP, for the ab exercises if we hit the top end of rep range at the stated rpe, we should add weight to the exercise like leg raises etc? Is our goal to progress including with weight lifted with ab work like it is for the other muscles? Or with abs we want to avoid using weights to prevent them from getting to bulky reducing aesthetics?

Either a barbell or dumbbell would work, though I personally prefer dumbbells (with straps) for both of those movements.

I would pick a more challenging ab exercise like toes to bar if maxing out the rep range for bodyweight -based exercises. For others that typically use weight, e.g. a cable crunch, I would add weight. I do not think using weight makes abs bulky.
