Bulk or Cut?

Hi Jordan,

You’re probably sick of this type of thread but I could use some advice.

I’m getting back into training after a month off. I was about halfway through the Beginner Template so I’m just going to restart that from the beginning and ramp back up as necessary.

I’m really not sure what to do with my weight.

I’m 27, causcasian., 5’8" and 176 pounds. My waist is 37.5", measured as per your instructions. I’ve been continually losing weight from a dirty bulk to 205 when I was on Starting Strength a few years back (before that I was very severely underweight).

I’m all gut and bones. I’d love to be around 185+ without the gut, and I’m tempted to do a bulk up to around that area and keep training and hope the gut goes away. Would this be a terrible idea, should I focus on losing even more weight?

I understand the cutoff point for health risks is 40" - does that mean that bulking is OK as long as you stay under that, or would you advise a lower cutoff point for the purposes of bulking?

I’d continue losing weight until your waist is <33", as the cut off for increased risk of disease and premature death is 37"
