I came across an (Dutch) article today which stated that calcium supplementation (not calcium trough food intake) was correlated with an increased chance of getting a hart attack.
I don’t have the citation but they mention a German study with 24000 particants in the British Medical Journal in 2012. I have been supplementing some calcium because I noticed
I wasn’t getting enough through my regular diet so I was wondering If you agree with the above statement.
There have been multiple trials looking into this and my take is that the need for calcium supplementation should be assessed by the doctor who is taking into consideration the risks and benefits of doing so. I would not self-prescribe calcium just because someone “wasn’t getting enough through their diet” without hard evidence they would benefit from calcium supplementation.
Heart disease and cardiovascular events have multiple inputs and in some populations, supplementing calcium can increase the risk of an event to a degree that outweighs the potential benefits.
I have calculated that the daily amount of calcium in my diet from food is about 300 mg from whole grains, and maybe 100 - 200 mg from other sources like potatoes and vegetables. I’m a male, 32 years old and about 220 pounds with a waist < 40 inch. I believe the recommendations for my demographic are about 1000 mg of calcium a day. Based on your post I’m considering adding some dairy(milk) to my diet instead of calcium pills to make sure my calcium intake is sufficient without the possible risks that come with supplementation through pills.
Furthermore I am curious what you consider to be hard evidence.
I would ABSOLUTELY not take supplemental calcium and do not think that you need to worry about your daily calcium intake at all.
Hard evidence would be pathological disease states that are improved via calcium supplementation. There are none that you have or are at risk for even if your calculated calcium intake is correct.
I have a number of allergies, both food and other, including milk and soya, and I need a calcium supplement as I only have rice milk which does not fulfil my RDA. I found some tablets in Poundland but it was like eating chalk and I just can’t stomach them. Can anyone tell me the best value supplier for palatable vitamins - I am able to buy in bulk if it is better value. Also, have heard that you should always have magnesium and vitamin D to take with calcium, but not sure what quantities I need. I need to also be able to check that they are dairy and soya free.
