I don’t know how to start this but I am looking for advice more than anything. My Dad was diagnosed with colon and liver cancer which is fast acting. He has mostly eaten bread, (refined) red meat, cake, pizza and some yogurt. Should I avoid those foods? I often eat bread with ham. What other foods should I avoid? What can I do to reduce the risk of developing colon and liver cancer? Fructoce <50g? He is non-obese and very active.
How many grams of sugar can I eat per day? My carbs intake is 650g.
What are great sources of iron (vegetarian and meat)? What can I put on my sandwich instead of ham for some iron?
I’m sorry to hear about your dad and I hope you are doing okay, reaching out to friends and family members for support.
In any case, I don’t think I would focus on reducing fructose, sugar, or increasing iron intake specifically. Rather, the health-promoting diet we advise is detailed at the end of this article with some additional nuance:
Hello Jordan, thank you for your reply. Much appreciated. It has been a hard month and it’s a big struggle and just getting hard.
I’ve been told I am very anemic and my doctor said that my iron is very low. So, I need to eat more iron rich foods. Do you have any ideas what to eat?
Whats your opinion on antinutrients in oats, beans and whole wheat bread? High levels of phyic acid are present in oats and other whole grains hindering the absorbsion of certain minerals. Cooking reduces these levels significantly as does soaking. Do I need to soak or cook oats?
If you’re anemic your doctor should have advised you on what foods you should consume and potentially have recommended an iron supplement after working up the anemia to confirm it’s due to iron deficiency. Has this been done? I’m not trying to deflect the question, but more just curious if you’ve been counseled on this already.
I think any worry about antinutrients is a TWOUD- time wasted on useless detail.
