Hello docs.
So my uncle has lung cancer (pretty advanced) and he got prescribed cannabis oil by some doctor i think. From what i can tell its all silly bs and he is wasting his time but i figured i would ask you aswell.
what are the pro’s (if any) and cons of using cannabis oil for lung cancer treatment?
Thanks
At the current time, there are no established benefits of cannabis for the treatment of lung cancer.
Thank you dr. Baraki, your answer is much appreciated
Just found out few more things that he has been prescribed and i figured i should ask here instead of making another post.
He now needs to follow a strict diet consisting of mostly plants and vegetables and no meat (some products from his prescribed diet are: rhubarb, kale, rucola, hummus, valerian, baked mango (?), cod liver; thats all i can remember)
additionally, he is getting some “realignment massages” or something like that, and i even heard my uncle saying “these bio energetic massages help”. I do not know what that is but those are his words.
Now, i know that none of these things help his lung cancer in any way (if you know otherwise please do tell me), but what i am really asking is: how do i go about it with my family? Usually when i try to tell them stuff like this they just tell me that i know nothing and “how could the doctor be wrong and you, right?”. Do you have any advice on this and also, do you know any good websites/studies that cover the stuff that i mentioned (diet and massages)?
I am very thankful for any help that you might provide.
Based on this description I am skeptical that your father saw a medical doctor at all. This is 100% pure quackery.
Having these conversations with your family can be very difficult. One option might be to pursue a second opinion from a board-certified MD in oncology.
Another place you can look for resources is by searching for “cancer quackery” at the sciencebasedmedicine.org website.
thank you very much Austin. And yes by doctor i just meant some kind of guy or girl that market themselves as some kind of cancer specialist or whatever. He has been consulted by real doctors too, and he did chemo and still does i think, but you know how people get desperate and try to find any other “alternative” way.
Cannabis might help with nausea, loss of appetite and pain associate with cancer and chemo, but won’t do anything for the underlying disease. Perhaps that’s why they were suggested? However, in light of the diet and massage recommendations, the whole thing sounds like quackery, as Austin wrote.
If he’s following the advice of real doctors for real treatment, is there any harm in the massages, given that he seems to find that they help?
If he’s continuing to follow recommended therapy and likes massages, that’s fine.
If he buys into the idea that massages are actually treating his cancer and decides to eschew recommended therapy, that’s not ok.
tjank guys

*### Although it is usually treated with chemotherapy and other targeted therapies, it raises the question of whether lung cancer can be treated this way. As far as I know, a few small, limited studies show that it can help stop the growth of lung cancer.*
