Carbs not Essential

Jordan,

I have heard multiple times that Carbs are the bodies preferred source of energy. I have also heard that they are not an essential macronutrient. I was wondering how it can be both preferred and nonessential

Brian,

The body can manufacture all of the carbohydrates it needs, which is why they’re not essential to consume in the diet. And yes, most cells prefer to use glucose as fuel, which is why the body is pretty good at making it even if we’re fasting or not eating a lot of dietary carbohydrates.

I don’t think low- or no-carbohydrate diets are superior dietary patterns for most folks.
