Colostomy - lifting possible?

Hi Jordan/Austin,
I’ve enjoyed training with your programs for the last four years, until being diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer earlier this year. After a few months out of the gym, I’ve had a transverse colostomy which has healed well, and I’m itching to get back under the bar and regain some of the 10kg of lean mass I’ve lost.

Have you any general recommendations/equipment suggestions for avoiding peristomal hernia/prolapse? I’m hoping there’s some kind of special lifting belt available to stop me squitting my guts out through my abdominal wall?

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about that diagnosis, but I’m glad that you are getting back to physical activity in this way.

I’m not aware of any special belt available for this purpose; we’ve also worked with folks who had colostomies before and were able to train without issues or special accommodations once the area was healed up. The caveat here is that I do not routinely manage ostomy complications and can’t speak to the actual risk at play.
