Deadlifts without putting weight down

Hello,

I truly appreciate all the knowledge you folks share on here for free.

A friend of mine and I were discussing deadlifts and he sent me a video of him doing a set of 6.
He does not put the weight completely down but stops ~1/2" from the floor and pulls from there, but also doesn’t keep his hips high like for a RDL.
It looks like a conventional deadlift to me.

I can imagine that having to control the weight on the way down leads means you can lift less like with the RDL, but that’s just a speculation from my side.

I am not trying to find something to go back to him and say “HA, told you so”, just interested in your opinion if there is are pros and cons to doing deadlifts like that.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that type of DL, but I don’t think it’s uniquely beneficial either.
