Differentiating Between Pec Tear, Strain, Cramp, and Spasm

Hello all,

I just completed day 1 of week 12 of Strength III. These were my working sets on competition bench press:

215 x 1 at 8
225 x 1 at 8.5
240 x 1 at 10
215 x 2 at 10
205 x 2 at 9 x 3

Everything was going great until the very last rep of the last set, at which point I felt some sort of a sharp in my pectoralis major on the second half of the negative. I was able to continue to lower the weight to my chest, pause, and press the weight with no increased difficulty; it was perhaps easier than the prior set, although it was quite painful. I was prescribed high incline bench press afterward, but waited some time and then opted for overhead press instead to reduce the burden on the chest. I completed four working sets with a mild amount of pain during each set.

Currently, I feel no pain when stationary and a mild amount of pain when contracting the pectoralis. I would say it feels considerably better now than it did at the initial onset of pain. I see no bruising or swelling anywhere on my pectoralis. To the touch, there is sharp but mild pain in a small area right above my armpit.

Reading online, I see a very small number of people ever reporting similar symptoms on the bench press. I’m curious if any of you have ever experienced something like this, and if you have any idea what I may be dealing with.

Thanks for your time.

Tears and strains are on the same spectrum. From what you are reporting, it does not sound like this is the case as there is almost always a definitive “pop” and visible retraction of the muscle. It is pretty typical from what you are reporting for symptoms to hang around for 4-7 days afterwards but slowly get better. You can typically train in these instances but need to account for symptoms in choosing your RPE. It looks like from what you have reported above for RPE ratings this may be something worth exploring more as without pulling up strength III I can’t think of a place in programming that has 2 sets @10 followed by 3 sets @9.
