Pec Strain

Hi Docs and fellow lifters,

I was benching yesterday morning and I was going for a 3 rep PR because everything was feeling light. I was progressing in sets of 3 on TNG bench. I was focusing on bar speed as I moved up. When I got to what should have been a three at RPE 8 it felt like an RPE 6. So I got greedy and added 10lbs to go for a new 3 rep PR. The weight was definitely a 7 or 8 feel and the bar speed was way up there. On the 2nd rep however I got a sharp pain in the pec where it attaches to the shoulder so I immediately racked the bar. I think I was using a bit to much stretch reflex and got a little loose in the bottom. I have had this in the past a few times many years ago. I think this is a relatively common occurrence in lifters. It feels like it’s a minor problem with the tendon or a small muscle tear. It is not a big deal but I am just trying to decide how to proceed. Immediately after it occurred I did some really light cable crossovers to see how it felt. Now 1 day later the pain seems to be subsiding. I recently heard one of your podcasts where you were discussing rehab for muscle tears. This is not debilitating but obviously I have to work my way back to benching full capacity. I plan to try just the bar and go from there. Do you have any advice in particular?

Thanks Austin! I haven’t seen one in a while. Thankfully I am in the gym now doing super light bench work and it feels good. I’ll take it real easy today and ramp slow over next few sessions as I continue to recover. Note the word “as”…
