I have AC pain with benching and was diagnosed by ortho with distal clavicle osteolysis. He recommended I choose between not benching 2 to 3 more months or a Mumford procedure. I chose the conservative treatment, for now at least.
Any experience with this issue? I already know if I wanna try and bench I should reduce weight, rom, change grip, use specialty bars etc, but do you have any specific suggestions? He said this would be ok and wouldn’t cause any permant damage or anything. Additionally, any experience with the mumford procedure, incase I get it in a year or something if things aren’t improved?
Thanks guys
Ps just graduated medical school 2 weeks ago, matched EM. Love your guys’ material and thanks for doing what you do.
Hey, thanks for the questions and congrats on med school graduation. What led to the consultation regarding your shoulder?
Osteolysis of the distal clavicle is a common finding in those who resistance train. Generally speaking I wouldn’t make that finding into an issue necessitating a specific intervention. Logically speaking, I struggle to see the need for a distal clavicle resection if we are already concerned about breakdown of the distal clavicle. We released a shoulder series previously that starts HERE. Be sure to check out part 2 HERE.
I went to ortho for pain. I last competed in April and was hoping to bench around 350 on my second attempt, but was in such pain I decided to only bench 200 lbs and forfeit my 2nd and 3rd attempt in an effort to keep a strong deadlift. I could barely do a push up at that time. I will check out that shoulder series, thank you for linking that to me.
