Dr. Miles with the mic drop

Hey BBM Crew,
i just read Dr. Miles closing statements on “should physical therapists use passive modalities on their patients?”, what a fantastic closing argument. I too have run into the issue at my university In the exercise science program with professors telling of the great effects of these modalities whether it be Graston, foam rolling or some other facial release/ analgesic aid. The problem is that they don’t really ever back these claims with evidence, and when presented with a counter argument with valid evidence they don’t seem to care.

They make a big effort in classes to drive home the fact that research should drive how we train or treat people but they don’t actually follow through with this themselves, practice what you preach I usually say in my head during class.

Then there is the problem of perceived superiority on the subject matter due to them being a professor or having Dr. in front of their name. People don’t seem to agree with a student if the professor has a differing opinion, even if that opinion is factually baseless, simply due to the fact that “we’ll they’re the professor so they know more then you”. It’s just frustrating when you have great ideas for training people that are based in evidence but no one seems to listen.

Have any of you docs had experience with this situation and if so what did you do in the situation?

i would advise everyone to go read Dr. Miles closing statements on the subject over at the logic for rehab website, it’s pretty awesome!

As always thanks BBM Crew
