Fasting Glucose

Hey all,

33M / 6’1" / 200 lb / ~35.5" waist

My fasting glucose levels have been hovering in the 97 - 99 mg/dL for a few years. I started barbell training 1.5 years ago. About 6 months ago, I began weighing and logging all of my food and lost 50 lbs (previous weight 250). I’ve also drastically reduced sugar consumption and processed carbs (crackers, breads, etc). I had my first blood test since the weight loss and my fasting glucose crept up to 101 mg/dL. My doctor has not yet suggested additional testing.
What is going on? I anticipated that value to drop to a more reasonable number, such as 90 mg/dL. Is there a chance that my body needs a little more time to adjust to the new weight and my next blood test will show positive results or am I in the group that losing weight won’t help much? I was 220 to 250 lb for about 17 years prior to the weight loss. Both of my parents are Type 2 diabetic and I’d like to hold that off as long as possible.

Thanks for your help!

Nice work on your progress so far. I can understand the confusion here.

The strong family history of type 2 diabetes raises a question of genetic susceptibility here. Of course, this is outside of your control, so I would agree with your focus on established modifiable factors – specifically getting (and keeping) your waist circumference down, staying highly active, and consuming a diet consistent with our general recommendations (high-fiber, adequate protein, with biasing fat intake towards unsaturated sources).
