For the second time within a couple years, my fasted blood glucose has been 100, which is considered prediabetic. My Doc has never contacted me about these findings, so I’m assuming he’s not concerned. Are some people genetically predisposed to higher fasting glucose levels? I would identify as a pretty health person, so it confuses me. Any advice on this? Thanks Docs!
Age:28
Height: 6’0
Weight: 210
Waist: 35(around navel), probably 15%bodyfat if I had to guess
Family history: I have an uncle who is prediabetic and a grandaunt with type 2 diabetes.
Exercise: weight training 4x/week. LISS cardio 1x/week 30-60 minutes.
Diet: plenty of protein, dairy, lots of fruit, veggie intake could use a little work.
Skeep: 7-8 hours. I don’t feel well rested usually but I attribute this to anxiety causing frequent awakenings when it’s bad. Sleep study 4 years ago showed nothing wrong.
Mental Health: Generalized anxiety- ongoing counseling. Hx of depression.
Medications: Finasteride 1mg daily for hair loss prevention
Thanks for the detailed information. It may not catch their attention because it is right on the “admittedly somewhat arbitrary” cutoff of 100 mg/dL. Addressing this in detail is typically something that needs more consultation, but we can probably get a bit closer with some basic information:
Have you ever had a HbA1c measurement done? How is your resting blood pressure?
When you say “plenty of protein”, what food sources does this come from?
Do you have a sense of your typical dietary fiber intake?
It would be informative to get an A1c measurement to see how closely it correlates with that fasting glucose measurement.
In addition, I’d suggest trying to increase fiber intake by incorporating foods like legumes/lentils (these can sub for some of your protein sources), as well as other fiber-rich foods like berries, oats, and other fruits/vegetables.
Sounds good. I messaged my doc about the whole situation. I will definitely increase my fiber intake. There’s lots of room for improvement. I’ll keep you posted.
Wanted to post an update for you. Had my annual physical yesterday. Fasted glucose was 100 again, but this time they took an A1c measurement. A1c was 5.06 and EAG was 97. Lipid panel was great. Is it still worth it to try to get my fasting glucose level down more?
Compared to last year, I am about 10lb heavier (successful bulk), and my nutrition is better (30+ grams of fiber, ~1g/pound LBM), and I’m actually doing cardio 3x/week in addition to lifting (I wasn’t doing ANY cardio before). I do plan to work my way back down to 210lb for a summer cut, so this may have an affect on the fasting glucose.
