Functional Dyspepsia

As the title states. I’ve been recently diagnosed with functional Dyspepsia. Been tested for for the helycobactor bacteria, had a gastrocopie etc. Found nothing. Was off the booze for 6 weeks. Still problems. Am on 20mg omeoprazol a day which worked for awhile but it’s acting up again. Also have domperidone but don’t really feel that it works, just makes the stomach empty after a meal. I will even regurgitate a cup of tea…

Been walking around with this for probably 2 years +. Gp first attributed it to alcohol cause I had slightly elevated liver functions. Been off the booze twice now for 5 weeks. Did not improve dyspepsia. Did improve blood work though.

Is there anything you guys can think off to make this workable? In the beginning I was just frustrated cause I couldn’t really gain weight but now… Hard to eat a lot with this condition. But ever since it just creeped up in every aspect of life. I don’t look forward to eating out, bbq’s, festivals etc anymore. Used to be an outgoing guy but after dinner all I can do is sit still and burp. It’s ups & downs of course but it’s being a bitch lately. I just wanna enjoy me coffee, meals, beer again. Being genuinely hungry would rock

Read some articles about medication for depression being used for this but haven’t found to many studies. Maybe u guys or someone in this group have any pointers or lifestyle changes that have good value.

Thnzx in advance and for the amazing work u guys do

I discussed this with a gastroenterologist colleague of mine.

He said it looks like you’ve had a reasonable evaluation so far, assuming they checked for things like celiac disease with labs. If a PPI doesn’t help and it’s truly a dyspepsia syndrome, tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) would be a reasonable next step. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) should be considered as well and either tested, OR follow a low-FODMAP diet for a few weeks (discussed here: http://myginutrition.com ).

Thanks for replying and giving such a concise answer. Also for asking your colleague.

Celiac disease was also tested for with the gastrocpoy. Came out negative for gluten allergy. The ppi helps a bit but it’s not a game changer really. Also feels a lillte weird to be an 20mg a day already. Im 28…

I’ll definitely check out the low fodmap diet. Should sibo be tested anyway or would the results from following the fodmap diet be enough of an indication? I’ll test a bit further and then maybe talk to my gp about a round of TCA’s.

Thankss. Happy holidays

If your symptoms resolve on a low FODMAP diet then you could probably stop there. If not, testing would be reasonable.

Also, regarding it feeling “weird” because of your age … that isn’t really a thing. People can develop legitimate medical issues at any age, of course.
