Functional training??

I’m often at the gym with a coach / PT college instructor who’s always talking about “functional training” and asking, “What are your goals?”

And my Beginner Template workouts seem to frustrate him. (I don’t engage.)

QUESTION: For a 63-year-old guy like me – who wants to be generally strong and conditioned, avoid a second heart attack, and do some recreational skiing and occasional (light) BJJ rolling – should functional training be a consideration?

The phrase “functional training” is meaningless. I would disregard his concerns and focus on yourself and your goals.

I’d argue there are few things more functional than a 63 year old who is running a strength template, skiing, and rolling.

Ha, agree.

Sure, that’s functional movement, but what if I get a slightly-low score on a super-specific FMS sub-score?

(Kidding.)
