Grip issues with Sumo

Hi everyone. I’m having some problems and questions regarding grip on sumo deadlifts. I’m running the strength 1 template. 1. I’m currently using mixed grip for all my work, but I’ve heard this will lead to injuries and inbalances. I don’t deadlift a lot yet (440lbs 1rm), so what are your thoughts on this?
2. I have succesfully used hookgrip in the past when doing conventional, but on sumo my fingers always ‘hook’ on my thighs during lockout. (I.e. they stick.) This makes using hook grip very awkward, do you have any tips on this? As a sidenote, is it okay to do some dumbell shoulder raises during the GPP arm work?

Jonas,

Thanks for the post. A few things:

  1. mixed grip does not lead to increased injury risk or imbalances. It does better adapt/prepare you to lift with a mixed grip though.
  2. Baby powder may help.
  3. You can do some lateral raises if you want, sure.
