A month and a half ago I cut out squatting and deadlifting in order to recover from internal hemorrhoids. Now that the bleeding has almost completely gone away, I’m going to reintroduce squats and deadlifts to my routine. Are there any preventative measures I can take to prevent these hemorrhoids from being exacerbated through squats and deadlifts? Would not wearing a belt help? In my mind, it would reduce the amount of internal pressure created from bracing, but it’s just speculation. I am a 20y/o male, 180lbs, and eat sufficient amounts of fiber. Thank you.
There probably isn’t much to do from a training standpoint here. While you can certainly try training without a belt, I have no evidence to support such an approach outside of pure hypothesis, as you noted.
Also no- outside of requiring a surgical intervention that is, likely, unrelated to resistance training levels.
I’ve had similar experiences twice last year. After many years of inactivity I began SSLP and a few weeks into training I was passing blood with bowel movements almost every time. I was referred to a specialist and had a colonoscopy scheduled (since I was 44 at the time). The bleeding stopped completely on it’s own after a week to ten days. When I had the colonoscopy, nothing was found other than a few internal haemorrhoids that the physician said were too small to worry about.
Three months later the bleeding began just as it did before but lasted longer, closer to three weeks. I used prescribed suppositories twice daily for ten days and they had no effect. Again, the bleeding just abruptly stopped.
Both my GP and the specialist said this is something that is not unusual and may just become part of life for me once and a while.
And since they are both good physicians, neither one of them told me to curb my weight training at all!
