High Lp(a). Should I consider statin?

Recently got bloodwork done. Lp(a) came back troublesome but rest of lipids seem okay. For reference, TC: 145, TGs: 65, HDL: 47, VLDL: 13, LDL: 85, HbA1C: 5.1%, Lp(a): 160.2 nmol/L.

I’m a 26 y/o male. Overall health promoting lifestyle.

I suppose my main question is would you recommend someone in my position begin seeing cardiologist or consider a statin? I understand the treatment for as of now for high Lp(a) is just to treat LDL more aggresively. I’m wondering if I should see my LDL as high in light of my Lp(a).

Thanks greatly in advance.

Hey there! Thanks for joining the forum and for the question.

We can’t give you specific medical advice here, though we’d be happy to discuss your concerns via a consultation. We can be reached via support@barbellmedicine.com.

Generally speaking, when Lp(a) levels are elevated, one thought is to “optimize” other risk factors to try and reduce risk as much as possible. There’s not enough information here to say definitively that your other risk factors are in fact optimized, but I wouldn’t be too excited about this cholesterol panel if it were mine. Again, there are other considerations that need to be made regarding treatment vs monitoring.
