HIIT VS LISS Conditioning for Fat Loss

Good afternoon,

I recently read and left a comment on Dr. Feigenbaum’s, To Be a Beast article, question was/is, I cannot bring myself out of bed in the mornings other than for work to do LISS. I train around 8 pm as it works out best for my schedule, I see that Jordan prefers trainee’s do HIIT on a prowler or a rower, my gym does not have either of those two pieces of equipment. I would prefer to sprint up a hill as my form of conditioning, over waking up in the morning, however it is Jordan’s opinion that doing such conditioning would be detrimental to the GainZzz. I am ~270 lbs, 6tf tall, and have a waist circumference of 43 inches, ~30% body fat. Would you say that reducing adipose levels is more important and therefore I should condition any way that I am compliant with? I played football in college and weirdly don’t mind sprints or hills, as longs as I am keeping track of session RPE’s and load the bar in a smart fashion, I should be ok to do sprints/hills while I drop my body fat levels? any input would be appreciated it!

Thanks for your time!

P.S. I listen to y’all on Spotify and appreciate all the FREE info you guys have put out there, have really enjoyed the scientific research, it has made me a better lifter without a doubt!

Rolando,

Thanks for the message and the kind words. They are much appreciated!

I do think that in this case I would prioritize weight loss via calorie restriction and increasing activity levels.

HIIT and LISS both work well for increasing physical activity levels and I don’t think that one is better than the other outside of the one that’s either more similar to your goals/needs or that you’re most likely to adhere to.

In your specific instance I don’t think hill sprints are a great idea for a 270lb guy who’s newer to training (and sprints). I’d rather have you start with 3x/wk of 30 minutes LISS and work up from there.

Dr. Feigenbaum,

Thanks for the advice, I have been waking up on my non-training days for a 30 min walk! I now get to enjoy the sunrise and some alone time before my day starts! Thanks again for all the free info you guys provide! I hope to make an impact within my family/friends in terms of boosting their physical activity levels and maybe just maybe re frame the way they think of barbell training or training in general!
