Hip Pain Advice

I think I’m well into consult territory at this point, but I’ll throw this out there anyway.

I’ve had vague right hip pain and reduced range of motion for the past couple of years, but over the last few months it has noticeably worsened. Along with increased pain, I’ve developed a sense of weakness and instability that’s started affecting my squatting.

The main issue is a pinching sensation in the anterolateral/lateral hip, especially in the bottom position of a squat and when initiating the ascent. This has made it difficult to drive out of the hole with any intent because of both pain and perceived weakness. The discomfort is most pronounced during the transition out of deep flexion, but I can also feel it throughout the full range of motion—even when simply standing locked out under the bar.

More recently, my left hip has started becoming painful in deep flexion as well, and both lateral hips have become achy even during bodyweight squats.

I’m currently finishing the final week of a hip rehab template, but symptoms haven’t improved. Deadlifting is completely pain-free, which makes the issue seem very squat-specific.

I’ve also noticed significant balance deficits and a general sense of weakness/instability on the right side during single-leg movements over the past several months. The right hip consistently feels weaker and less stable compared to the left.

Positive FADIR on the right side FABEr doesn’t hurt on the right but does show significantly reduced ROM. Reduced flexion as well

Goal is to return to pain free barbell squatting

Sorry to hear you’re in pain. That’s frustrating, for sure, especially after running a rehab program. While we expect many hip/leg issues to respond to that template, there will be outlier cases that require more individualized management. As you guessed, yes, this is outside the scope of a forum reply and I think you’d benefit from working with one of our coaches.

Hope to hear from you soon:
