Hip Pain and squats

Hey Drs!

A quick intro, I’ve been doing the Beginner program, just started week 8 and it has been fantastic - have run the LP a few times in the past but always felt beat up towards the end but my fatigue levels with RPE and whatnot are managed so much better and I have made great progress so far;

27 years old, 6’3’’

BW: 84kg → 92kg
Squats: 60Kg → 107.5kg
Bench: 40kg → 65kg
Deadlift: 90kg → 155kg These are all for sets of 4

So I have been experiencing some hip pain that started out just around my squats but has began rolling into day to day life whenever I flex my hip (getting out of the car, for example). The odd thing is that the pain disappears as soon as I get to my working weight but is there every squat of the warm up up to that point.

The pain is bilateral and is around the AIIS and doesn’t radiate anywhere - feel like a sharp pain would rate it 5/10 most of the time and I only feel it when I move - no stiffness etc. I usually squat low bar but after continuing having troubles with elbow pain and the rack position and just issues with the squat in general I tried high bar today and the pain was still there, but slightly reduced.

Like I said, it doesn’t actually stop me squatting but it seems to be growing as a problem - any suggestions as to what this may be or what i can do to get round it?

p.s. for what it’s worth, I am a chiro student and we recenty ran through myotome and muscle tests and my hip flexors where barely graded at 3, just holding them in position was shaky.

thanks in advance!

This may be something like a proximal hip flexor tendinopathy. Regardless, the specific diagnosis is less important as the management will be similar for most of these sorts of things.

I would listen to our recent tendinopathy podcast, and check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdwj5ORPmX0
