How does one evaluate and select a PCP/Specialist?

I am needing to select a PCP and a Cardiologist. I am wondering what sort of “evaluation” us common folk might do when selecting a doctor. Obviously there are many options out there but other than word of mouth how does one make this choice?

Outside of ensuring that you are seeing a board-certified physician, I’m afraid there aren’t easy ways to evaluate this before seeing someone other than word of mouth.
