Suggestions on how to find a good doctor?

Hi Docs,

I’ve recently moved to north west Houston, TX, and while I haven’t had a regular doctor since I was in High School (I’m 42), I’d like to find a better than average local doctor for a middle aged dude who cares about health and strength. I take no medications except for a rare OTC decongestant for sinus/allergy issues (1-2 times/month).

I visited a doc from the in-network list on my providers website just for blood work and to check freckles, but he seemed super rushed, dis-interested, and thought the thin line of rough skin across my back from heavy squats was sun damage.

Do you have any suggestions on how to find a good local doc?

Thank you!

Brian

Finding a local doctor that’s a good fit for you is probably going to involve word of mouth and trial and error, to be honest.

Hi Austin, thanks for reply. I’ll keep looking.

It seems non-doctor people are good at judging things like personality, well functioning office, reasonable wait times and the like and not very good at judging clinical talent. This can be a problem if you have an issue that requires clinical talent.

Do you believe this is accurate?

If so, do you have any suggestions for non-experts (who get word of mouth from other non-experts) figuring out how to find doctors that are talented at medicine?

Austin, would you recommend looking to concierge services? I imagine there might be a selection bias there, where physicians who pursue concierge type practices are particularly interested in taking the extra clinical time, etc?

PS - as a side note, I’ve joined a waiting list for you on SteadyMD in Ohio if and when you get licensed here.

Unfortunately, I don’t really have any suggestions here. Sorry.

If a concierge practice model fits with a patient’s needs, preferences, and financial situation, it can be a good option for folks.

And thanks for signing up!
